A scientist-turned-lawyer with a PhD in Biology/Immunology, Dr. Weinstein brings a rare combination of deep technical fluency, global research experience, and high-stakes legal judgment to the innovators and organizations he serves.
A U.S.-registered patent attorney, Dr. Weinstein began his legal career at leading international law firms before serving as Senior Patent Counsel at Baxter Healthcare Corporation, where he led IP strategy, played a key role for business development, led two of the companies major licensing and technology transfer efforts and led IP litigation for major global therapeutics. While at Baxter, Dr. Weinstein was also an active member of two research core teams based in Europe that brought two therapeutics from the bench to the market (Adenovate© and VonVendi©). During his tenure, he built patent portfolios that have since generated significant monetary value and helped shape international research and development initiatives.
As Practice Chair of Intellectual Property at Omnus Law, Dr. Weinstein leads the firm’s IP strategy and growth. He works closely with partners, associates and other team members to build a forward-looking platform serving biotechnology, pharmaceutical, medical device, artificial intelligence, energy, hardware/software and advanced engineering clients. Dr. Weinstein’s experience extends beyond traditional legal roles. As a co-founder and CEO of a rapidly scaling biotechnology company, Circurna, he has personally built and led teams, navigated fundraising, overseen clinical research efforts to bring multiple therapeutics to the clinic, and negotiated global partnerships. This operator perspective allows him to advise clients not only as legal counsel, but as a strategic business partner who understands how intellectual property, regulatory timelines, investment strategy, corporate, employment, partnering and commercial viability intersect.
His international background includes scientific research in Taiwan and business and legal work in Austria, collaborations with institutions across Europe, Asia, and South America, and coordination of cross-border patent portfolios and litigation with foreign counsel. Clients rely on Dr. Weinstein for clarity, responsiveness, and the ability to translate complex science into strong, defensible, and commercially meaningful intellectual property assets.
Today, Dr. Weinstein partners with innovators, founders, research teams, and established companies to develop IP strategies that support growth, investment, and market differentiation. Known for his technical depth, strategic thinking, and results-driven leadership, he continues to build a practice defined by client trust, word-of-mouth referrals, and long-term relationships.
Make your Patent Work for You
Securing intellectual property is a key step for innovation - but what happens next? 52 Launch offers a path beyond the patent to bring the product to real users: product development, branding, prototyping, and go-to-market strategy.
5 Things to Know Before Working with a Patent Attorney and Bringing Your Product to Life
1. File Early - The First-to-File System is Critical
The US operates on a first-to-file system, meaning whoever files first gets priority rights. In competitive fields where multiple innovators might be solving the same problem, filing as early as possible becomes crucial for securing your invention rights.
2. Avoid Public Disclosure Traps
You have only 1 year from any public disclosure to file your patent application, or you lose your rights forever. Be extremely careful about presentations, publications, or detailed discussions without NDAs - even university presentations can invalidate your patent rights.
3. Provisional Applications Must Be Detailed
Many inventors underestimate provisional applications, but inadequate descriptions can lead to loss of priority rights. Be as detailed as possible - if you don't adequately describe your invention, you're not entitled to the filing date as your invention date.
4. Understand the 18 to 24 Month Timeline
Expect your first patent office response 18 to 24 months after filing. Rejections are normal: over 90% of applications receive initial rejections. Plan for multiple rounds of responses and amendments during prosecution.
5. Align Patent Strategy with Business Strategy
File patents on innovations that create competitive moats, not just any invention. Focus on high-leverage opportunities that add real value to your company: each patent should be a strategic asset that supports your core value proposition and fundraising goals.
